Kentucky Derby Day!
The Bissett Perspective: Finding the closers, and picking a sleeper!
Every year, the Kentucky Derby stands alone in one of the most exciting sporting events on the yearly calendar.
This day brings back memories from betting quarters with my grandpa Jurn while watching harness racing at the local fairgrounds. This eventually led to watching live racing at the now-closed Swartz Creek track, just outside of Flint, MI.
On Derby Day, I'll find a free past performance sheet and immediately look for the horses that are the best closers in the race. Considering the length (1 1/4 miles) of the race, we need the ones who are picking up positions at the end of their previous races.
Head of the class in this field is the early favorite, Sierra Leone.
Next in this class is Catching Freedom.
The third horse on my radar is Honor Marie. The only concern here is that the speed rating could play a role in this race. However, on a muddy track, it may level out the running field just enough to keep him in contention at the end of the race.
My sleeper closer is the No. 3 horse Mystik Dan. I think he is a top 5 horse. However, will have to do some work to get into the top 3.
With the closers put away. The next look is the pedigree of the horse. The one horse that fits this criteria to me is Just A Touch. The names Scat Daddy, Tapit, and Justify stand on their own. All the horses I have seen run in these Triple Crown races. The worry here is, can Just A Touch go wire to wire in this race? I think they hold on for a 3rd or 4th place finish here.
